10 Gallon Aquarium Light Mod

Back

After getting my 29 gallon tank set back up I decided I would like to have another tank. The only problem with the 10 gallon light I had is that it was only 10 watt. That is not enough to grow many plants and for me thats part of having an aquarium. This is a quick and easy mod to get 3 watts per gallon. To find your watts per gallon you just do watts / gallons = wpg.

Parts: Prices:
Two On/Off lamp socket from lowes $3.25 x 2
Two 15 watt cf 6500k bulbs from walmart $5.98 for a 2 pack
White spray paint from lowes $0.99
Extension cord. $1.29
Wire nuts $0.50

Instructions:

First thing you will need to do is figure out how to get the old florescent parts out. Mine had four screws holding it in.

Next you will need to paint the inside of the hood with the white paint.

Third you will need to drill a hole in each end of the hood for the lamp sockets. Wait for the paint to dry before doing this.

Cut both ends off your extension cord and figure out how long each piece of wire will need to be and cut a couple peices that length.

Now seperate about 2 inches of each end of each wire and strip about a 1/2 inch off it.

Attach one end of each wire to each lamp socket and connect the other ends together with the hoods power wire, using the wire nuts.

Take both lamp sockets and secure them in the holes you drilled.
