Car PC

Back

The goal for this project is to bring as much functionality to an older car as new cars (possibly more). The car picked for the project is my 78 Camaro Type LT. The big reason this was picked is because of the fact that it lacks any thing computer controlled. Now some of you may think this is a silly reason to pick the car but the fact of the matter is that I personally don't think computer controlled engines need to be on hot rods. They switched to fuel injection to get better gas mileage and supposedly make the car more reliable (which I have found to the contrary). Back in those days you listened to radio or tapes. A lot has changed since those days. There is a whole host of new media that has come out and is still coming out to this day (cd, mp3, ogg, wmv, wav, and plenty more audio formats that I am missing). Along with video (vcd, dvd, mpeg 1/2/4, wmv, and again plenty more I am forgetting). These will all be playable by the new carputer and many other things can be done with it. It will be equipped with 802.11b/g (maby some day 802.11A), blue tooth, inferred (for interfacing with a remote thanks to ir2pc). It will be able to report temperatures of various parts of the car (Outside, Inside, Intake, Water, and possibly more). This will give me the ability to keep an eye on just how hot parts of the car are getting and even graph them over time. This will all be kept as a removable part of the car and the car will not depend on any system so if one should fail the cars reliability will not be effected.
