Replug

The Jack Saver

After getting my Cowon o2 I went looking for some thing to help me protect my 3.5mm audio jack on it. Every day I end up plugging and unplugging the o2 at least four times a day. After a while this can ware out any mechanical connector to the point that it needs replaced. So I looked into just a very short 3.5mm Male to 3.5mm female that way if it wore out I would just throw it away and get another one.

Then I found the replug which works the same was as that but I also get the added bonus of protecting the jack even more so. The replug if pulled from any angle other that straight out, will snap free with out damaging your audio jack. For every one who has tripped over or gotten a headphone cable caught on some thing this is for you.

Now apple has a magnetic plug that they use for there laptop power connections. This is similar but not magnetic in any way. The replug relies on a green ring of pliable rubber/plastic to fix it to the metal 3.5mm audio jack. I say rubber/plastic because it is stiffer than most rubber products and softer than most plastic products.

The only down side to it not being magnetic is that if you leave the replug in the car over night during cold months then the green rubber/plastic gets stiffer when cold. Not a deal breaker but just some thing to keep in mind as the force required to disconnect and reconnect is higher. All in all though I really do like this and for $10 usd it makes a great stocking stuffer.

Update - 12/19/09
After using the replug for a couple months, it has finally shown some signs of ware. The thin rubber has torn at the center of the device. I think this is only due to the fact that it has been used in cold conditions. The last two pictures on this page show the issue.
